Which crops in the agricultural field specifically require phosphoric acid?

Oct 09, 2025

In the agricultural field, phosphoric acid (mainly provided in the form of phosphate fertilizers) is one of the three essential elements for crop growth, namely "nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium". Phosphorus can promote root development, flowering and fruiting, and enhance the crop's resistance to adverse conditions. The following are several types of crops that need phosphorus the most or are sensitive to it, as well as the core roles of phosphorus for them:

Economic crops

Cotton: Phosphorus can promote deep root growth, early flowering and fruiting, reduce flower and fruit drop, and improve fiber quality.

Rapeseed: It requires a large amount of phosphorus, especially during the seedling stage (phosphorus deficiency can lead to weak seedlings and purple leaves). Phosphorus can promote branching and podding, and increase oil content.

Peanuts / Soybeans: Phosphorus is needed by leguminous crops to promote nitrogen fixation by rhizobia. At the same time, phosphorus can increase pod fullness and reduce empty pods.

Fruit and vegetable crops

Fruit trees (apples, citrus, grapes, etc.): Phosphorus can promote flower bud differentiation, fruit enlargement, increase fruit sweetness and color, and enhance the tree's cold and disease resistance.

Melons (watermelons, cucumbers, melons): Phosphorus deficiency during the seedling stage can cause weak vines. Phosphorus can promote fruit setting, reduce fruit abortion, and improve the taste of melons.

Solanaceous crops (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants): Phosphorus can promote flowering and fruiting, extend the fruiting period, reduce deformed fruits, and increase yield.

Grain crops

Wheat / Corn: Phosphorus can promote root development and tillering (in wheat), and strong seedlings and resistance to lodging (in corn). In the later stage, it can also promote grain filling and reduce shriveled grains.

Rice: Phosphorus can alleviate cold damage at low temperatures (especially during the early rice seedling stage), promote effective tillering and grain filling, increase 1000-grain weight, and reduce lodging.

Other special crops

Root and tuber crops (potatoes, sweet potatoes, radishes): Phosphorus can promote the expansion of underground roots and tubers, reduce small fruits, and increase starch content.

Flowers (roses, lilies, succulents, etc.): Phosphorus can promote flowering, extend the flowering period, make the flower color more vivid, and enhance the stress resistance of succulents.
