What is the difference between carotenoids and beta carotene?
Jun 19, 20241. Different food sources
Carotene: food sources are mainly dark-coloured vegetables and fruits.
beta carotene: exists in large quantities in plants.
2、Different concepts
Carotene: carotene is the main source of vitamin A, mainly α, β, γ three forms, of which the most important for the β-carotene.
β-carotene: β-carotene (C40H56) is one of the carotenoids, is an orange-yellow fat-soluble compounds, it is the most commonly found in nature is also the most stable natural pigments. It is a member of the family of natural chemicals (such as carotene or carotenoids).
3. Different properties
Carotene: orange crystals, chemically stable, insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, soluble in organic solvents such as petroleum ether.
β-carotene: the appearance of pure reddish purple to dark red crystalline powder, slightly peculiar odour. β-carotene dilute solution is orange-yellow, soluble in dichloromethane, chloroform, carbon disulfide and other organic solvents. When the concentration of the solution increases with orange, because of the polarity of the solvent can be slightly red. Unstable in oxygen, heat and light. It is more stable in weak base.
